Best Digital Camera 2007

What the heck is the difference among all those Canon ELPHs anyway?

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm a big fan of Canon's Digital ELPH series, but I can't tell you how many times friends have called me from Best Buy in a state of confusion about which one to buy. It's no wonder. Stop into any electronics store today and you'll find a slew of ELPH models and they all look pretty similar to the untrained eye. So here's a quick primer on what's what, broken down by resolution (since for better or for worse, that's how most people seem to shop for cameras). For comparison's sake, I included current pricing from Amazon.com.

12.1 Megapixels

Canon PowerShot SD950 IS ($340) - released August 2007: This is Canon's current top-of-the-line model (successor to last year's SD900 which you'll still find in some stores). It sports a sleek, rugged titanium body, 3.7x optical zoom lens (36- to 133mm), an Optical Image Stabilizer, Canon's latest face-detection autofocus technology, in-camera red-eye correction, and like all the current ELPHs, uses Canon's top-end DIGIC III image processor.

Nikon Coolpix S200 compact digital camera

Nikon is world-famous for its high-end, professional cameras, but it's always struggled to break into the consumer market where rival brands have a much stronger following. In an attempt to crack this lucrative market, the company has launched a new ultra-compact – the Nikon Coolpix S200. The Nikon Coolpix S200 is by far the smallest camera that Nikon has produced to date and is as small, light and thin as anything else on the market, which is always a good start.

Sharper Image, Lillian Vernon in bankruptcy

NEW YORK — A weak holiday season and a struggling economy led retailers Sharper Image Corp. and Lillian Vernon Corp. to file for bankruptcy this week, and analysts predict others soon could follow them as consumer spending worsens.

"You'll see a record number of bankruptcies over the next 50, 100 and 1,000 days," said Burt Flickinger III, managing director of New York-based retail consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. "Consumers are cash- and credit-constrained. They're out of purchasing power."

Both Sharper Image, known for its high-tech novelty gadgets, and Lillian Vernon, which sells low-cost gifts and gadgets through its catalog and website, have long been plagued with falling sales.

But retailers across the sector have been laying off staff and closing stores as consumers cut back on discretionary spending.

Granholm urges quick end to texting scandal: 'It's bad for our image'

City mulls appeal of order to release secret files Paul Egan and Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Thursday the text messaging scandal involving Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is "bad for the city, it's bad for the state, it's bad for our image."

"This is why I hope that whatever happens happens quickly, so that we can move and turn the page," Granholm said in an interview on WXYZ-Action News. "There's so much work we've got to do. There's such great momentum in the city. So we need to keep that going and work to keep that going because there's work to do."

Asked if she believes Kilpatrick can survive politically, the governor said: "I don't know. I don't know. He's got that information. I have no idea what's in the documents.

WE'LL TAKE A CUT

Should any player be unhappy with a wage deferral, he could invoke a 14-day notice clause in his contract if he feels there has been a breach of its terms and conditions.

However, as players are not permitted to move outside of the transfer window, this option could be seen as counter-productive.

Premiering on the silver screen: Ads

Now, more marketers are turning to theaters to unveil new campaigns on 40-foot screens with rich audio before they scale down the ads and put them on television.

For some in the advertising industry, the recent writer's strike shined a new light on cinema opportunities.

Ad-buying behemoth MediaVest, whose client roster includes Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Kraft Foods Inc. and Procter & Gamble Co., began talks last month with leading cinema ad companies Screenvision and National CineMedia LLC about transferring more than $100 million of prime-time ads from television to the movie screen.

"Even without the writer's strike, should that not have happened, we'd still be talking to our clients about looking at their current communications mix," said Norm Chait, MediaVest's senior vice president and director of out-of-home investment and activation.
