| JVC GR-D750
The final word: The GR-D750 is a solid little performer that punches well above its weight; offering impressive image quality for entry-level users. If you're on the lookout for a cheap miniDV camera, you could certainly do a lot worse than this. ON PAPER at least, the GR-D750 is the unmistakable runt of the JVC litter. With its low image resolution, rudimentary feature set and cheap looking design, we certainly weren't expecting much; yet it turns out that looks can be very deceiving. From its attractive price tag to its above average video performance, this is one of the best budget offerings we've seen in quite a while. It represents excellent value for money and is a perfect introduction to digital video - provided you can live without the bells and whistles. The GR-D750 is a standard-definition camcorder that records video to miniDV tapes.
Jonathan Takiff: That special Valentine's gift? Color it high tech
The Gizmo: Fashion-conscious high-tech gifts from the heart. Shop Til You Drop: You could buy her a sweater or some sexy underwear, if you dare, or maybe some flowers. But what fun is it for a guy to shop for those kinds of Valentine's Day presents, when he could be hanging out instead at his favorite electronics store, and buying his honey something that he feels comfortable with, and that she could really use and (effectively) wear, day in/day out? That seems to be the thinking behind some of the high-style, colorfully wrapped, high-tech gift items that manufacturers are now promoting for guys to give their girls - or for women to get for themselves. Gizmos as Art: Tech gear has been "worn" as a mainstream fashion statement as well as for practical purposes ever since Kodak first strung a neck strap to its leather-clad Brownie box camera at the turn of the 20th century.
General election has arrived
It's starting to feel like the general election. Rising to claim victory in the Wisconsin Republican primary before the networks could declare Barack Obama the winner on the Democratic side, John McCain started right in on his general election opponent. He promised to "make sure Americans are not deceived by an eloquent but empty call for change that promises no more than a holiday from history and a return to false promises and failed policies of a tired philosophy that trusts in government more than the people." Scorch. Some 40 minutes later, Hillary Clinton got up before the cameras and set out her platform as if she were the winner, ignoring Obama as she had on primary night the week before. Having not been extended this courtesy, Obama did not extend her the courtesy of waiting for her to finish before he began his victory speech.
Poisoned dumplings put child in coma
China's exports have come under intense scrutiny in the past year after a number of potentially deadly chemicals were found in goods including toothpaste, toys, pet food and seafood. China's government launched a four-month campaign last August to improve the quality of Chinese products and restore international confidence in its goods. Officials termed the campaign a success.
