| No retreat from the War on Terror
Go ahead, fall back and surrender. Yes, oh yes, the U.S. will be there AGAIN to save you, no matter what it costs us. And yes, like always, we won't take compensation, just a place to bury our dead. If the U.S. wasn't here, even with all the problems we can cause, how long do you think you'd already have before you would have to 'submit' to Islam? Think about it... honestly. Wanna take the chance? .
Intel peddles pie in the sky
INTEL'S PAUL OTELLINI gave a CES keynote that had one new codeword, some tech that is much farther off than he hopes and a lot of older process technology news. We will skip the older stuff. The technology is based on the idea of a Star Trekish communicator, a little PDA that will translate voice on the fly. This may not surprise you, the tech is close to real, and probably will be available in the not hugely distant future. It may even be in PDA form before we all die of old age and ennuis. The part less likely to happen before the sun dies a heat death is the camera on the back translating everything that you take a picture of. The Chinese writing on the store menu might be possible, but tossing in contextual info based on pictures? Overlay it intelligently on video in realtime? Ummm, call me a skeptic......

Microsoft's keynote presentation at the Game Developers Conference 2008 just wrapped. While there were few surprises to be had, finally confirmed was a highly anticipated sequel. Gears of War 2 Announced Rumored for months, Epic Games' CliffyB took the stage during the Microsoft keynote at GDC 2008 with Lancer (the chainsaw gun) in hand to announce that Gears of War 2 will hit in November 2008, only on Xbox 360. See the debut teaser here. Unreal Engine 3 Gets Enhanced Epic Games' Tim Sweeney walked the audience through improvements in Unreal Engine 3 with advanced character lighting, ambient occlusions for shadows, fluid effects, destruction effects and other details. All the new features will likely be implemented in Gears of War 2. Ninja Gaiden II to Release Worldwide Early June Team Ninja's notorious Tomobu Itagaki in his trademark leather and shades demonstrated a new Ninja Gaiden II stage prepared exclusively for GDC 2008.
Casio Exilim EX-Z600 digital camera
Casio's Exilim EX-Z600 point-and-shoot is ultra-compact, yet it has a bright and large 2.7-inch LCD. That's important because this camera lacks an optical viewfinder, and when shooting in bright sunlight, images on the Casio's display are perfectly visible. The EX-Z600 comes in either a silver or a black case. While informal shots I took with the 6-megapixel EX-Z600 looked pretty good, the camera's images earned below-average scores for color accuracy and sharpness in detailed lab tests. The EX-Z600 also scored poorly in exposure accuracy tests, compared with other point-and-shoot cameras we looked at recently. Usability is always a concern with pocket-sized point-and-shoots—especially those with big LCDs that take up a lot of space—and the EX-Z600's controls are definitely a mixed bag.

BBC journalists have done quite a bit of video from CES this year. You can see a round-up on the website here. Some of our stuff is also appearing on YouTube. You can take a look at Click's Spencer Kelly rounding-up Intel's ultra mobile plans on BBC Worldwide's YouTube page. And here's a video we made, whizzing around CES in a three-minute tour. UPDATE: Here's Rory's video on the public row between Intel and OLPC that I found on YouTube too. Permalink Comments (2) .
Mix it up for the holiday so everyone has a choice
Pretty good, I'd bet. The worst-case scenario is you wake up Jan. 2 and still have some wine left. But, really, how bad is that? Save any unopened bottles for another special occasion. Most white wines will last in the fridge for a year or more; most reds can hang on for a few years. Buying a case also means you don't have to worry about having just the right kind of wine to suit everyone's taste. Instead of offering one type of red or white, why not offer two, or three, or four? There's no easier way to boost the spirits of a table than to set out an assortment of wines your guests can mix and match with the food. And the best part: Buying wine by the case saves money. Most liquor stores offer 10 percent off on a 12-bottle case; at some stores, the discount is 15 percent.
Jurors see school intruder in recording
A man claiming to want a job is allowed into Clarke Middle School, but he ducks into a room, dons a jacket with a hood pulled down low and furtively looks both ways before sneaking into a girls' restroom and trying to rape a 12-year-old student. That's what prosecutors claim 32-year-old Michael James Kirt did the morning of March 1, and on Wednesday they showed jurors in Clarke County Superior Court surveillance camera footage that caught everything Kirt did in the Baxter Street school - except while he was in the restroom where the alleged attack happened. The girl he allegedly cornered in a bathroom stall screamed and attracted the attention of school employees, one of whom testified Wednesday that Kirt was holding up his pants, which had fallen "below his butt" as he fled.
