| I'm putting the claws away this year, L-bear
Ah, Winterfest. The city of Lowell's knock-off of Germany's Oktoberfest. Hold the phone Mr. City Manager. I am not one to bash anything that has to do with consuming mass amounts of beer in public. We all need a little happiness here in New England after the incident that happened this past Sunday. I won't mention any names ... Tom, Randy and Tedy. It's going to take more than a six-pack to cure this girl's depression. Winterfest could just be the remedy that I am looking for. What better way to spend a weekend than watching semi-plastered people pull a human dog sled? You want a pot hole filled on Chelmsford Street, the Rourke Bridge replaced, the homeless people left alone or your tax rate to go down? Then act like a paparazzi when and if Britney Spears takes a ride in a hearse.
Tom Savini, Legendary Special Effects Make-Up Artist, Actor and ...
MONESSEN, Pa., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Douglas Education Center (DEC), a creative career school located just 30 minutes south of Pittsburgh, is already home to Tom Savini's monstrously successful Special Make-Up Effects Program, which began in 2000 and has graduated hundreds of students from all over the country. DEC offers many other programs besides make-up effects, including graphic design, illustration, cosmetology, and starting in February, Tom Savini's Digital Film Production Program. "Our film students are going to have the opportunity to collaborate with all of these other programs on their productions," said Savini. "They will be surrounded by talented individuals, just like in a professional studio, from the very first day they step on campus." Each student entering the 16-month program receives a video camera and a laptop computer fully equipped with software for all their filmmaking needs.
Golf Gift Do's and Don'ts
Save the receipt, however, and don't take the shrink wrap off the clubhead. At some shops, doing so will instantly reduce the club's return value by 30%, even if it never strikes a ball. (Feel free to buy clubs for kids or beginners, though, since they haven't yet had time to build the full-scale equipment neuroses that avid golfers develop.) Another generally safe golf-gift category is books, if only because they aren't wildly expensive and the recipient can easily store (or hide) a golf book on a bookshelf -- read or unread, you'll probably never know. Golf books come in two categories: humongous and those actually meant to be read. The former, usually filled with lush photographs of exotic courses taken either 30 minutes before sunset or 30 minutes after sunrise, are essentially golf pornography.
Casio Exilim EX-V7 digital camera
It turned out to be a challenge to get very worked up one way or the other about Casio's Exilim EX-V7 , a camera that balances out to be an almost perfectly average point-and-shoot. On the plus side, the 7x zoom lens covers a lot of territory, and the camera's battery life of almost 1,195 shots per charge is exceptional for its class. (The Nikon Coolpix S50c [ ] holds the lowest score, with 347 shots per charge; Samsung's NV11 [ ] performed best, achieving 1,233.) Throw in a few points, too, for a full range of manual exposure controls, a rarity in this category. On the mildly annoying side, there's the zoom slider control, which is awkwardly placed adjacent and vertical to the LCD screen. Also, image stabilization proved too ineffective in most situations. And the plastic docking cradle, required to recharge the battery, will take up more room in a suitcase than most folks would care to sacrifice.
Retailers promise bigger bargains - and bigger TVs - this shopping ...
Shoppers who missed last year's 32-inch flat-panel television bargains are in for a Black Friday treat: Several retailers are offering low prices this year on even bigger television sets. It's the biggest shopping day of the year, and today's newspaper reflects it. It's stuffed with deals. Larry Levak, Charleston Newspapers' vice president of advertising, said there are 41 inserts totaling 674 pages. They weigh 3 pounds, 11 ounces. There are so many the inserts have been assembled in three thick batches and then placed in the middle of the regular daily paper. Levak said crews began assembling the advertising supplements on Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 and then worked from Saturday through Wednesday to complete the task. The advertisements show that on Friday, Sam's Club is offering a 42-inch Sharp-brand high-definition television for $866.52.
