Camera makers vie for SLR buyers' attention

Camera manufacturers including Canon, Pentax, and Fujifilm will show new digital SLRs for professional photographers at the PMA07 show in Las Vegas next month. The new models balance traditional and advanced features to retain existing customers and tempt new ones.

Canon will show the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR, an upgrade of its classic 1D model that shoots 10.1 megapixel images at up to 10 frames per second. Canon developed a more sensitive image sensor for the camera that can be pushed to ISO 6400, it said Thursday.

Fujifilm, meanwhile, will show the FinePix S5 Pro, which begins shipping this month. The digital SLR has a 12.34 megapixel image sensor: half the pixels respond best to low light levels, the other half to stronger light, a system that captures images with a wider dynamic range, the company said.

Today's Report

Atlantic recording artist Shadows Fall has received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance for the song "Redemption" off their critically acclaimed label debut, THREADS OF LIFE. Shadows Fall frontman Brian Fair said the following: "We walked off stage in Milan Italy last night after a killer set on the Black Crusade tour and my phone started buzzing. After cracking a beer I checked my message and was absolutely shocked and amazed to find out that we had been nominated for our second Grammy!!! Redemption has been nominated in the best metal performance category for this year and I could not be more proud. The song is a celebration of the power of music and the human voice as an agent of change and to have it recognized in such a way is incredible. We were able to celebrate last night with our brothers in Machinehead who were also nominated.

AMD, NVIDIA duel in mobile graphics; 3D iPhone still distant

We're barely into this year's Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain, and already the dueling press releases are flying. Fresh off the wire are two long-awaited and closely matched mobile graphics products from NVIDIA and AMD, both of which will bring some measure of desktop-caliber graphics to handheld devices.

First up is STMicro's announcement of the first fruits of its alliance with AMD (announced at last year's MWC): the 65nm Nomadik STn8820 mobile application processor. STMicro's new chip combines the same mobile graphics core used in AMD's Imageon line with an ARM11 CPU core, and it tacks on a ton of other functionality, some of which I'll mention in a moment.

Nomadik's graphics core is based on the same unified shader architecture (USA) that powers the Xbox 360, so Nomadik supports OpenGL ES 2.0, D3D, and the same tools and APIs that work with Imageon.
