Eagleman 'Time Slowing' Experiment Invalidated

R&D engineer, technologist, and conceptual theorist Marshall Barnes has now published a digital article that completely invalidates the celebrated findings of Baylor College professor David M. Eagleman, showing the perception of time slowing down during a crisis event is a function of enhanced memory. First published in December of 2007 in the online journal PlosOne http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0001295 , the peer reviewed Does Time Really Slow Down During A Frightening Event? posited that anecdotal accounts of time slowing down for people during frightening events are simply a function of the brain recording the event in a richer, more detailed process, resulting in memories of things happening slower.

The response to the report across the Internet was mixed, even as media attention of the Eagleman report grew.

Lumix DMC-FX100 digital camera

A new contender in the bantamweight division of the digicam market, Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FX100 packs a lot of power into a compact package that's easy to carry and use. Its resolution of 12.2 megapixels seemed like overkill at first, yet the camera produced clear, well-exposed images at every setting. Image stabilization was consistently effective, and those who love to shoot landscapes will appreciate that the 3.6x zoom Leica lens starts at a wide-angle 28mm.

Serious shutterbugs may be disappointed at the lack of manual exposure controls, but in our Macworld Lab tests, there was little reason to second-guess the camera's calculations. The DMC-FX100 achieved Good scores for image and flash quality, and Very Good marks for color quality.

The camera's menus and controls are well thought out, with most important settings just a click or two away.

What Laura Bush said about Condi.

Probably because she is single, her parents are no longer living, she's an only child. You need a very supportive family and supportive friends to have this job."

Yikes. Single women can't be president! Move over, Barbara. ... P.S.: Does Laura Bush's intra-party sneer get Sen. Barbara Boxer off the hook? Or--by suggesting some powerful subconscious urge of married mothers to condescend to single women--does it make it even clearer that Boxer is guilty? Bush's comment certainly doesn't make the Boxer incident seem like a better episode for feminism. ... 1:04 A.M.

Against the War, For the Surge: I was throwing out some newspapers and came across something I'd forgotten: Michael Gordon's November 15 NYT piece describing how General Anthony Zinni, a trenchant and consistent critic of the decision to go to war in Iraq and of the prosecution of the war, supports something that looks an awful lot like President Bush's surge:

Anthony Zinni, who used to head the U.S.

Mustangs win as Rasheed scores 25

DANVILLE — Niveen Rasheed seemed as if she was everywhere Friday in leading the Monte Vista High girls basketball team to a hard-fought, 49-42 victory over Newark Memorial in the second round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs.

Rasheed was in the middle of the action all night for the Mustangs (25-2), who struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against the 2-3 zone the Cougars (18-11) used throughout the game. She scored a game-high 25 points, and was the defensive catalyst as well.

"It was one of those nights where the ball wasn't dropping for us," Rasheed said. "They played us tough in their zone, and we were a little ragged offensively. I wanted to provide some energy on defense to try to get us going."

Newark let the Mustangs know that they were going to be in for a battle early.

Obama wins Louisiana Democratic primary

George W. only held office for 6 years as Governor of Texas before being elected president. Obama has a longer public service record than either of these two, yet no one questioned their experience. The president will be a team builder, manager and policy maker. Honestly, who has shown the best ability to perfrom these tasks than Obama thus far. Look at the numbers he is putting up and the funds he is raising. Hillary's campaign should run out of steam within the next few months if not sooner. She is loaning money to her campaign and has maxed out from her contributors, only to be trumped by the sums Obama has received. She has no room to grow for fundraising.
