| JVC GR-D750
The final word: The GR-D750 is a solid little performer that punches well above its weight; offering impressive image quality for entry-level users. If you're on the lookout for a cheap miniDV camera, you could certainly do a lot worse than this. ON PAPER at least, the GR-D750 is the unmistakable runt of the JVC litter. With its low image resolution, rudimentary feature set and cheap looking design, we certainly weren't expecting much; yet it turns out that looks can be very deceiving. From its attractive price tag to its above average video performance, this is one of the best budget offerings we've seen in quite a while. It represents excellent value for money and is a perfect introduction to digital video - provided you can live without the bells and whistles. The GR-D750 is a standard-definition camcorder that records video to miniDV tapes.
Speedway Children's Charities gives $7,500 for public school projects
Speedway Children's Charities gave $7,500 for public school projects in parts of North Carolina, including Cabarrus County. Eleven Rowan County teachers have posted projects on www.DonorsChoose.org, and the Speedway Children's Charities money goes to purchase resources for use in the classroom. Thirteen requests from Rowan-Salisbury teachers have been funded through DonorsChoose.org to date. One West Rowan High School class, listed as Mrs. B.'s on the Web site, sought high-tech equipment to help with a broadcast. This was their funding request: "Our rural high school boasts several cows, chickens, goats and sheep. What we lack is an abundance of technology. I teach 11th grade honors and Advanced Placement English as well as the journalism course.
New Gladewater police cameras approved
Gladewater police soon will get relief from a year-long headache from faulty patrol car cameras. The Gladewater City Council agreed this week to purchase eight new digital cameras, costing a total of about $42,000. The cameras, expected to arrive within the next few weeks, replace cameras the police department purchased about two years ago. More than a year ago, the cameras began malfunctioning, randomly deleting recordings, Gladewater Police Chief Farrell Alexander said. On a handful of occasions the Gladewater Police Department had to drop charges because there was no video. "That's happened," he said. "It's not been prevalent because a lot of cases don't absolutely require video." However, by law police must have video cameras in patrol cars, the chief explained.
TORCH NEWS TICKER 2/10: Identity of Steiner's new valet, Foley ...
Updated throughout the day, it's the Torch News Ticker with all the news and info that's not fit for print. Keep it open in a new tab and bookmark it every Monday! Sunday, February 10, 2008 10:00 p.m. - Early TNA PPV notes: The new valet to Scott Steiner is Trenesha Biggers, who was a college volleyball player at Florida St. and contestant in the 2005 WWE diva search. She worked through WWE's developmental system before being released in May 2006. Trenesha recently appeared on an FIP show in November 2007 against the current Peyton Banks, who wrestles as Rain on the independent scene. 6:00 p.m. - Mick Foley has an interview with the U.K. Sun discussing his future in WWE and his current limited role. The usual self-deprecation from Foley, including this line about his Rumble cameo appearance: "If everybody is tanned, then nobody really looks tanned, there's got to be one pale guy out there to make the tans stand out, and I see that as my role – the pale white guy." Foley talked about one of his sons booing him and accepting his role in WWE as a guy who won't draw ratings or buys, but can be valuable in a limited role.
An eco-friendly inn in Madison
No one turned down the turkey bacon, but I had reservations about the orange juice, which tasted like Tang. Every evening, there's a fresh baked pie put out for guests. Breakfast is the only time the inn's spell of seclusion is broken. Although there are individual tables, we inevitably ended up at a table with the woman reading "Germs, Guns and Steel" and she wanted to talk all about it. The inn also offers complimentary drinks each evening, but we declined the margaritas and chips. In the adjoining building, guests have free run of the kitchen for beverages (coffee, tea, soda), which is delightful for insomniacs like me. I checked my e-mail late at night on a free inn computer, then retired to the common area to read by the fireplace. AREA: The inn is located in the Dudgeon-Monroe neighborhood, which is full of parks and shopping and all measures of cuteness.
