What the heck is the difference among all those Canon ELPHs anyway?

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm a big fan of Canon's Digital ELPH series, but I can't tell you how many times friends have called me from Best Buy in a state of confusion about which one to buy. It's no wonder. Stop into any electronics store today and you'll find a slew of ELPH models and they all look pretty similar to the untrained eye. So here's a quick primer on what's what, broken down by resolution (since for better or for worse, that's how most people seem to shop for cameras). For comparison's sake, I included current pricing from Amazon.com.

12.1 Megapixels

Canon PowerShot SD950 IS ($340) - released August 2007: This is Canon's current top-of-the-line model (successor to last year's SD900 which you'll still find in some stores). It sports a sleek, rugged titanium body, 3.7x optical zoom lens (36- to 133mm), an Optical Image Stabilizer, Canon's latest face-detection autofocus technology, in-camera red-eye correction, and like all the current ELPHs, uses Canon's top-end DIGIC III image processor.

Macworld surprise may be a slim laptop

Jobs traditionally uses the Macworld Expo this month to showcase new products. Last time, it was the iPhone and Apple TV; the year before, faster Macs with Intel Corp. chips.

Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster and UBS AG's Benjamin Reitzes expect Jobs to capitalize on demand for the Mac by introducing a smaller, lighter version of Apple's MacBook notebooks. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst David Bailey anticipates a version of the iPhone with 16-gigabytes of storage, double the capacity of the current $399 device.

Olbermann Accuses 'Fascist' Bush of Engaging in 'Terrorism'

The idea that even the most cynical and untrustworthy of the politicians in our history, George W. Bush, would use the literal form of terrorism against his own people was dangerous territory. It seemed to tempt fate, to heighten fear. We will not fear any longer. We will not fear the international terrorists, and we will thwart them. We will not fear the recognition of the manipulation of our yearning for safety. We will call it what it is: terrorism. We will not fear identifying the vulgar hypocrites in our government. We will name them. And we will not fear George W. Bush. Nor will we fear because George W. Bush wants us to fear.

Below is a complete transcript of Olbermann "Special Comment" from the February 14 Countdown show on MSNBC:

Now, as promised, a "Special Comment." A part of what I will say was said here first on January 31.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets

Just when it seemed this season had gotten as bad as it possibly could, things got even worse for the Miami Heat. They were torn apart at home to the Raptors Monday night, losing by 23 points as nine-point underdogs.

The 114-82 defeat was Miami's biggest of the season and it allowed the Raptors to shoot 66 percent through the first three quarters. At one point in the final period the Heat were down by a remarkable 39 points.

They have now lost 19 of their last 20 games, covering the spread just twice over that time. They have also dropped nine straight on the road and their 9-38 record is easily the worst in the NBA.

Pick: Pistons

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets (-2, 219)

Carmelo Anthony returned from an ankle injury last weekend and suddenly the Nuggets look like a more dynamic team.

Perry, small lakes are hot spots for fishing

Most of the fish we have are fairly small as we sampled about 2,300 fish and only about 10 percent of those were legal fish over 10 inches and those were pretty nice fish."

Tjelmeland said some of the best crappie fishing is happening right now at Perry.

"Those fish are schooled up right after the ice comes off and they're usually hanging in 12-18 feet of water in some kind of brush and as it warms up in the spring they move towards the bank and think about spawning."

The crappie spawn can make a lot of fish accessible to shoreline anglers making it a favorite time of the year to fish. Rocky rip-rap and shoreline brush piles are great places to target.

"Last year it was nice and the fish moved up early and during the first part of March there were guys catching them in 4-6 feet of water," Tjelmeland said of the pre-spawn pattern.

Where is my sunshine, my only sunshine?

If you suspect you have SAD, visit a mental health professional who specializes in mood or sleep disorders, in part to rule out other problems. And read up on SAD; information can be found on the Web site for The Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms (www.sltbr.org).

In addition to exercising and getting outdoors, my own treatment for the winter blues involves re-reading "All Summer in a Day," which is so vivid that you can actually feel the sun's warmth on your face and arms.

For a cheerier version, watch the film. The kids change their mind and free Margot just before the sun vanishes, so she can see a sliver of sunlight. Bradbury actually liked that ending more than his own, said Sam Weller, a professor at Columbia College Chicago and author of "The Bradbury Chronicles" (William Morrow, $26.95).
