Quik Pod offers self-portraits, made from within arm's reach

Heather Hill's column on consumer trends, gadgets and useful news appears each Tuesday in The Sun. Her daily online column can be found at www.lowellsun.com under the heading "Heather Help Us."

We've all done it. Rather than ask a stranger to take your photo, you extend your arm as far out in front of you as possible, lean back and smile — and hope you get the appropriate background and faces within the frame.

It can make for a goofy shot. And unless you don't mind pictures that are mostly forehead or double chin, the results are usually rather unflattering. But thanks to a handy new gizmo called Quik Pod, decent self-portraits are within arm's reach.

A classic example of "Why didn't anyone think of this before," Quik Pod is a slim, telescoping device that serves as an extension of your arm, thus putting an end to those too-close closeups.

Body material on dSLRs

I was supposed to buy a dSLR last December but decided to hold for a while because of the PMA event, so I could see if there would be new models of dSLRs I could choose. Since there are none for the moment, I've narrowed down my choices to the Nikon D80 and Canon EOS 40D. I know both of them have 10mp sensor. I just want to know what is the relevance of the body material used in these dSLRs (EOS 40D using magnesium alloy; D80 using high-grade-quality plastic)? Do they affect the longevity/lifespan of the unit?

I'm more exposed to nature photography and often go to places where the weather changes everyday. Submitted by ppcfan15, Philippines

Nikon announces its latest D-SLR camera called the D60

Nikon is one of the largest and most successful makers of digital cameras on the market and has made a full line of D-SLR and point-and-shoot digital cameras for years.

Today Nikon announced the newest member if its D-SLR line called the Nikon D60. The camera will sit in the line between the D40x and the D80 in both price and features. While Nikon has declined to comment on pricing at the moment, we can get an idea of the price range the D60 will retail in be looking at the D40, D40x and D80. The Nikon D40 sells for $549.95 in kit form, the D40x sells for $699.95 in a kit and the D80 sells for $999.95 all with a kit 18-55mm lens. That would likely put the new D60 in the $800 price range.

The New D60 has a 10.2 megapixel DX-format CCD sensor and exclusive EXPEED image processor.

A Little Bit Country a Lot Glam on the CMA Red Carpet

It was jeans for some (Kid Rock, of course) and gowns for others at last night's 41st Annual Country Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee. Nicole Kidman definitely brought the most bang to the red carpet in her bold dress — sure it looks a little like one of those cheesy college dorm felt-y posters, but it's not like she can't pull it off. Carrie Underwood looked typically great while fellow former Idol-er Kellie Picker looked surprisingly demure for her. I must admit that Kate Walsh looked pretty smokin', finding a way to be on our ABC Wednesday night even when Private Practice was preempted for these awards. Fab wants to know what you think about all the red carpet looks — check out her love it or hate its. Meanwhile, Bella's all interested in what you think about everyone's beauty, so check her polls out here.
